Monthly Theme
This month's theme is "GIS and the “Mash-Up” Revolution: Integrating Geospatial Data with Google and Microsoft".
Microsoft Expands 3D Building Renderings to Several Michigan Cities - Expanding their offerings of 3D buildings for Virtual Earth, Microsoft recently added the cities of Flint, Lansing, Kalamazoo, and Ann Arbor. The building footprints include many of the multi-story buildings in the cities with near photo-realistic rendering using Pictometry's bird's-eye imagery. In order to view the buildings, you must first install Microsoft's free Virtual Earth software. Please visit VirtualEarth.com to view the new 3D buildings.
Related Story: Microsoft acquires 3D imagery and animation firm Caligari as part of their Virtual Earth group to enhance Virtual Earth's 3D capabilities.
100 Google Mash-Ups - Looking for the nearest Starbucks or avoiding a disease outbreak? If so, check out this wide-ranging list of Google mash-ups. For more information on the multitude of maps created using Google, please visit the Google Maps Mania blog.
Bridge Tracker Application Details Bridge Structure Status Across the United States - Concerned about the structural integrity of the bridge you're about to drive across on the highway? Would you like to know that last time it was inspected and the results? If so, head over to MSNBC and check out their Bridge Tracker mash-up. Bridge Tracker allows users to enter a route and automatically display the bridges traversed on the route, their structural condition, and relevant inspection data. The dataset includes bridge data for the State of Michigan and the majority of the United States.
Upcoming E-News Themes - In addition to our permanent 'GIS in Michigan' coverage, we include an additional theme for each monthly issue. The theme will not limit the E-News articles to only this theme, but rather it will provide an additional focus for some articles.
The theme for the March 2008 issue of E-News is "GIS in Planning and Economic Development".
Send any ideas you have relating to the general 'GIS in Michigan' theme of the E-News or the special theme for next month to enews@imagin.org.
